With the ‘staircase’ as its central structure, the work draws on classic images from *Psycho* and transforms the film’s psychological space into a contemporary personal experience.
The staircase consists of images of the artist’s private living space, printed on semi-transparent gauze and affixed to a metal structure. The “home”, which is supposed to be a closed and safe place, is here dismantled, elongated and exposed, transforming into a path that can be observed and traversed.
At the top of the staircase, a frame projects a loop of the staircase scene from *Psycho*. As they ascend, the viewer gradually approaches this image, but ultimately reaches a “pre-existing image” repeatedly reproduced by culture, rather than any sort of real destination.
Through the interweaving of space, images and bodily experience, the work explores how the individual is shaped and observed between private memory and public visual culture, emphasising that the ‘self’ we arrive at has perhaps always been mediated and reconstructed by images.
